Pre-Rolled Joints: What's Inside and How to Choose One — title on a dark background, stylised hemp leaf

A pre-rolled joint is a ready-made joint: a pre-formed paper cone filled with ground cannabis flower, closed at the tip and ready to light. Pre rolls, prerolls and rolled joints all mean the same thing. On the CBD shelf, you’ll mostly find them as hemp pre rolls, packed with hemp flower and nothing else, so they’re tobacco-free by design.

Think of a pre-roll as the espresso capsule of the cannabis world. Rolling your own is like grinding fresh beans at home: more control, more ritual. Pre rolled cannabis gives up some of that freedom in exchange for consistency, a standard portion and zero prep time.

Not all pre rolls are built the same way. A few are still hand-rolled one joint at a time, but most are filled into cones by a pre rolls machine designed to pack every unit to the same density. Don’t mix one up with a blunt, which is usually rolled in a thicker wrap: a classic pre-roll is typically ground flower in paper, sometimes with a filter tip added.

This guide takes pre rolled joints apart layer by layer. You’ll see what’s inside (flower, trim, filter tip), how cones and sizes compare, and how the CBD, CBN and THCX ranges differ. It then covers how to judge and store a pre-roll, so you can decide whether to buy ready-made or roll your own.

What's inside: flower, blends and filters

Knowing what a pre-roll is gets you halfway. Of all the ways to smoke weed, it’s the one where you can’t inspect what’s inside, so the other half is reading it like a label, layer by layer, starting with the flower. That’s what decides almost everything else.

A true flower pre roll is filled with whole buds, ground up before filling. Trim and shake are the leftovers: small sugar leaves and broken bits from the bottom of the bag. The difference shows fast: the aroma fades, and the burn turns harsh and uneven.

Blends mix two strains, or flower with trim. Neither is a problem in itself, but good packaging tells you which one you’re getting. If a CBD pre roll just says “blend” with no details, assume trim is doing a lot of the work.

Then come the two parts most buyers overlook:

  • Rolling papers: hemp, rice or wood pulp. A thin, unbleached paper stock lets the terpenes come through, while thick or bleached paper adds its own taste and drowns out the strain.
  • Filter tip: also called a crutch, made of cardboard or glass. It keeps the end firm and the airflow open. It isn’t a filter in the cigarette sense, and it doesn’t strip anything out of the smoke.

For you as a buyer, the practical point stays simple: treat the tip as a structural part that shapes the draw, not as a filter.

With pre rolled joints, the paper and the tip shape the taste experience almost as much as the strain does. A great flower in thick rolling paper is like a fine wine poured into a plastic cup.

Cones, sizes and formats: king size, regular and packs

With the inside of the joint covered, the next thing to look at is its shape. Almost every pre roll you’ll find today is a cone, and there’s a mechanical reason for that. The wide end holds most of the flower and the narrow end meets the tip, so the fill packs evenly and the burn moves forward steadily instead of running down one side.

A straight, cigarette-style roll looks neater but often packs loose in the middle. Length matters as well. A king is not simply a longer regular: a rolled king size cone is longer and wider, so the balance between paper and flower changes.

Format Shape Paper vs flower
Slim Narrow cone Most paper per gram of flower
Regular Standard cone Balanced
King size Longer, wider cone More flower relative to paper

Packaging is the last layer. Pack pre rolls come in rigid tubes, resealable doypacks or boxes of 3, and all of them protect the cones and their filter tips from crushing and humidity. Compare on unit price, never on the price of the whole pack.

ℹ️ To compare pre rolled joints fairly, use the single joint as your price unit: divide the pack price by the number of joints, then by the net weight per joint. That gives you a unit price per gram, which is the only figure that lines up across formats. The label should also show the strain and the main cannabinoid.

CBD, CBN and THCX pre-rolls: how the ranges differ

Once the shape and pack are sorted, the real choice comes down to what’s inside the cone. Of all the ways to enjoy cannabis, a pre-roll puts the flower front and centre: most CBD pre rolls use hemp flower selected for its CBD, so the strain name tells you more about aroma than anything else.

  • Citrus: Amnesia, Lemon Haze and Super Lemon Haze lean on bright, zesty terpenes. A Super Lemon smells like lemon peel grated straight into the grinder.
  • Woody: White Widow sits in a drier register of pine and pepper.
  • Earthy or sweet: a Kush CBD brings soil and spice, while Gelato CBD tilts towards creamy, berry-sweet dessert notes.

How the plant was grown shows up too. Indoor and Hydro buds usually look denser and frostier with a sharper nose, while greenhouse flower looks looser and smells rounder. If you want the woody side in a ready-to-go format, the Box of 3 CBD Pre-Rolled Joints – White Widow is a clean example among the pre rolls available.

With CBN or THCX pre rolled joints, the flower logic stays the same: same strains, same aromas. What changes across these products is the cannabinoid named on the label. THCX is a trade name, not a molecule: every batch is lab-tested for classified molecules and none are detected.

Pre-rolls may be the easiest of all the ways to consume cannabis flower, but that’s no reason to guess. Whatever you roll with, read the cannabinoid on the label instead of guessing from the strain name. The lab analysis of each batch is available on request from customer service.

How to judge and store a pre-roll (and how long it lasts)

Picking a range is one decision. The pre-roll in your hand still has to pass inspection, so before you light any of your pre rolled joints, run this quick check:

  • Fill: firm under a gentle squeeze, never rock-hard, with no soft or hollow spots.
  • Tip: no dust or loose crumbs falling out of the twisted end.
  • Paper: clean and even, without stains or yellow patches.
  • Smell: lemon, pine or earthy notes depending on the strains, but always fresh and sharp. A flat, hay-like smell means the flower has already dried out.

Pre-rolled joints don’t stay fresh forever. Over time, the flower tends to dry out, the aroma fades and the paper can start to yellow. Ground flower is the weak point: in a year-long storage study, terpene levels fell under every condition tested, and grinding the buds was among the least favourable conditions[1]. Humidity is the other risk: white fuzz or a musty smell points to mould, since moulds such as Penicillium can colonise cannabis buds after harvest[3], and that joint goes straight in the bin.

If you want to store pre rolls properly, keep them sealed in their original packaging in a cool dark place, away from heat and light, and they stay in good shape for a few months. Light matters most: a classic storage study of herbal and resin cannabis found light to be the greatest single factor in cannabinoid loss, and air oxidation also caused significant losses[2]. In more recent tests, warm room temperature was the least favourable storage temperature for cannabinoids[1]. Once the pack is open, move your current pre rolls into an airtight tube or jar. Don’t leave them on a sunny windowsill after delivery, and close the tube right after you take one out for max freshness.

ℹ️ To put out a pre rolled joint, tap the ember gently against the ashtray until it goes dark instead of crushing it. A pre rolled king size cone keeps its shape that way, so the rest relights cleanly.

Crushing the end flattens the cone and compresses the fill. That flattened tip then draws unevenly, which is the opposite of what you paid a ready-made format for.

Pre-roll or roll your own? An honest comparison

Storage handled, one choice is left: ready-made or rolled yourself. Each side has a clear edge.

  • Pre-roll: consistent rolls, hassle-free, no grinder, rolling paper or filter tip needed, though it costs more per gram with less say over the flower.
  • Roll your own: full say over strain, amount and paper, if you have the time and a little rolling technique.

Our take: pre rolled joints win for discovering a strain or travelling, and loose flower wins once you know your favourites. Within the same format, the strain is the only thing that changes, so a box of 3 is the simplest way to compare aromas side by side.

Pre-roll or blunt?

Same idea, different jacket. A blunt swaps thin paper for a thicker hemp wrap that brings its own taste, burns slower and makes itself felt on every pull. Think of it like a sauce that’s heavier than the dish it’s poured on.

  • Thin paper pre-roll: lighter wrap, quicker and more even burn, and the paper stays quiet so the terpenes lead.
  • Hemp-wrapped blunt: chunkier, slower burn, and the wrap’s own taste sits on top of the strain.

If you’re tasting strains, go paper. A blunt is fun, but it blurs the very aromas you’re trying to compare.

What is the best pre-roll joint?

The best pre-roll joint checks three boxes: whole flower free of shake or trim, thin unbleached paper that doesn’t mask the aroma, and a price per gram worth paying. When you compare that price, look at the full basket too, since free shipping on a bigger order can quietly change the maths. Miss one of these checks and you’re paying for convenience, not quality.

Run those checks on any box, ours included. For a bright, citrusy start, try the Box of 3 CBD Pre-Rolled Joints – Amnesia. For a more classic profile, the Box of 3 CBD Pre-Rolled Joints – White Widow makes a good counterpoint.

Every strain we carry sits in our CBD pre-roll collection, so you can line up your next comparison there.
