Everything that goes around flowers and hash, and nothing from the plant itself: grinders, rolling papers, hemp wraps, tips, rolling trays, gas refills for lighters and dry-herb vaporizers from Storz & Bickel and AUXO. These are the tools the Spliff team uses day to day, chosen to last, to keep a session tidy and to respect the aroma of what you put in them. Here is how to choose each one, what it is made of and how to look after it.
Grinders. A grinder breaks buds down evenly, so they roll straight and burn or heat at the same pace from start to finish. Three things matter when choosing one. The teeth: sharp, diamond-shaped teeth cut rather than crush, which keeps trichomes on the flower instead of on your fingers. The number of chambers: a two-part grinder simply grinds; a three- or four-part model adds a mesh screen and a lower chamber that collects the fine pollen, which you can later add to a joint or press. The material: aluminium is light, rigid and does not shed particles, while plastic is cheaper but wears faster. Size is the last criterion: the Grinder Mini slips into a pocket and handles a single session, a larger model suits anyone who prepares several joints at once. Whatever you pick, a grinder only works well on dry flowers; buds that are too fresh clog the teeth.
Rolling papers and wraps. A paper is chosen on three criteria: size, thickness and material. Slim, king-size papers such as the X32 slim booklet leave room for a generous joint while keeping a regular shape. The thinner the paper, the less it adds to the taste, and the slower and more even the burn, provided the joint is rolled firmly. Material matters too: unbleached, natural-fibre papers taste more neutral than bleached white ones. For those who prefer a blunt, the Zelta hemp wraps are tobacco-free and come in seven flavours, from Original to Apple, Blueberry, Bubble Gum, Manic, Red Alert and Watermelon. A wrap is thicker than a paper: moisten the seam lightly and press it along its whole length so it holds.
Tips and filters. A tip, or roach, gives a joint a firm mouthpiece, keeps the end from collapsing and stops small bits of flower from reaching your mouth. The Tonc Spliff, made from hemp and compact enough to carry anywhere, does exactly that while leaving the taste of your herbs intact. Roll the tip first, then the paper around it, and the joint will keep its shape to the end.
Lighters and gas. A refillable lighter lasts for years if you give it clean fuel. The butane gas refill fits most refillable lighters: turn the lighter upside down, press the nozzle into the valve for a few seconds, then wait a couple of minutes before lighting so the gas settles to room temperature. Adjust the flame low; a tall flame chars the paper before the tip catches.
Rolling trays. A tray keeps everything in one place, catches what falls from the grinder and makes it easy to pour the rest back into a jar. The Spliff tray comes in a sober black design, and the limited-edition Creation tray revisits an art classic. Both are rigid, easy to wipe and flat enough to roll directly on.
Vaporizers. A dry-herb vaporizer heats flowers without burning them, so you taste terpenes rather than smoke. The CALENT by AUXO is compact and quick, with conduction and infrared heating and a zirconia mouthpiece. The CRAFTY+ and the VENTY, both by Storz & Bickel, are portable: the first with a single button and three settings, the second with a very fast heat-up and adjustable airflow. The VOLCANO HYBRID is the desktop reference, with balloon or whip. The manufacturers recommend 175 to 185 °C to get the most flavour from dry herb. The guide to cannabis terpenes explains which aromatic compounds come out at which temperature, and the article comparing disposable pens, pods and 510 cartridges helps if you are hesitating between a vaporizer and a pen.
Storage. Light, heat and air are what age flowers and hash. Keep them in an airtight glass jar, in a dark cupboard, and away from the grinder and the lighter. Hash keeps well wrapped in baking paper, flowers in a jar that is not opened more often than necessary.
Care and cleaning. Brush the grinder teeth after each use and, every few weeks, soak the metal parts in isopropyl alcohol, rinse with warm water and let them dry completely before reassembling. For a vaporizer, empty the chamber once it has cooled, brush it out, and wipe the mouthpiece and screens with a cloth moistened with alcohol; the manual lists the parts that can be dismantled. A tray only needs a damp cloth.
To fill all of this, the CBD flower collection and the THCX hash are the natural neighbours of this section, and the pre-rolled joints are there for days when you would rather not roll at all.
