Badajoz, in Spain's Extremadura region, hosts two Iberian events on 4 and 5 November 2026: a medical cannabis symposium and an industrial hemp congress. Around 300 professionals are expected, according to La Portada de Extremadura, with Spain and Portugal cooperating.
Key points
- A medical cannabis symposium is set for 4 November and a hemp congress for 5 November 2026 in Badajoz.
- Reports give 300 or 280 attendees; the two registration counts are 80 and 200.
- The hemp congress is part of HEMPVALUE, an EU co-funded Spain-Portugal research project.
The city of Badajoz becomes a meeting point for the cannabis and hemp sectors this week. Two separate events run back to back, one on therapeutic uses and one on industrial crops, according to La Portada de Extremadura. For background on hemp and cannabinoids, see our full product range.
Medical cannabis symposium opens on Wednesday
The first Iberian Medical Cannabis Symposium takes place on Wednesday 4 November at 19:30. The venue is the Sercotel Zurbarán in Badajoz, with 80 registered participants.
The programme covers therapeutic applications of cannabinoids, scientific advances, analytical and quality control, the regulatory framework and commercial opportunities. The Secretaría General de Economía, Empresa y Comercio of the Junta de Extremadura funds the event.
Hemp congress follows on Thursday
The second Iberian Hemp Congress starts on Thursday 5 November at 9:30 at IFEBA. It has 200 registered participants, according to Región Digital.
Speakers will look at industrial hemp as a way to diversify farming. They will also discuss it as a raw material for new food products, biomaterials, building materials and other industrial uses.
HEMPVALUE project backs the congress
The congress belongs to HEMPVALUE, co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg VI-A Spain-Portugal programme (POCTEP) 2021-2027. CICYTEX coordinates it.
The project brings together seven scientific and technological bodies, three Spanish and four Portuguese. Both outlets say the aim is scientific and commercial cooperation between the two countries, technology transfer, and new investment and jobs in Extremadura.
Why Extremadura is betting on hemp
Badajoz hosts these meetings for the second year running, according to Región Digital. In 2020, CTAEX presented its Hemp Technology Hub. In 2023, the Junta de Extremadura, CTAEX, CICYTEX, OITAB and CETARSA signed a collaboration protocol on hemp research and cultivation.
Projects such as MARGIN-UP, BGREENER and HEMPVALUE assess hemp agronomically, including its contribution to biodiversity. The region’s industrial farming tradition is seen as a base for a new activity.
Two uses, one plant species
The articles stress that industrial hemp and medical cannabis come from the same species but serve different uses with specific requirements. Greenhouse-grown medical cannabis needs prior authorisation from the AEMPS when meant for scientific and therapeutic use.
Under Spanish legislation, hemp is currently grown for seeds and fibres. Región Digital also cites an EU limit of 0.3% THC for industrial hemp and about 100 varieties on the EU catalogue.
Attendance figures differ between reports
La Portada reports about 300 professionals in total. Región Digital’s registrations add up to 280 (80 plus 200), so the exact total remains unclear.
What it changes for you
Nothing changes directly for your purchases or for the rules where you live. These events are professional meetings, not new laws.
They could, however, signal growing interest in European hemp supply chains and research. If you want to browse legal-market hemp products, our CBD flower collection is one place to start. Every Spliff product is lab-tested: THC content below 0.3% (0% for vapes and pods). The lab analysis of each batch is available on request from customer service.
