Bedrocan cannabis Netherlands: a buyer sought after October bankruptcy

NewsNetherlands

Bedrocan, the only Dutch medical cannabis producer, is looking for a buyer to restart operations in Veendam after going bankrupt in early October 2026. One party is negotiating with the curator, according to reporting published on 4 November 2026.

Key points

  • Bedrocan has been bankrupt since early October 2026; several parties approached the curator, and one is negotiating a full takeover.
  • The founding Erkelens family is working on its own restart plan, and the outcome remains open.
  • Patients in Belgium, Norway and the UK are affected, and British stocks are said to last six months.

Bedrocan has been bankrupt since early October 2026, according to cannabisindustrie.nl. Several parties have since contacted the curator. Only one is currently negotiating a full takeover of the Dutch operation, and its identity has not been disclosed.

Founding family works on a restart

The Erkelens family, co-founders of the company, is preparing its own restart plan. A Bedrocan spokesperson said the revival is not certain, but that there are good reasons to hope the product line will continue.

Tjalling Erkelens said the bankruptcy does not mean Bedrolite or the other standardised varieties will disappear.

A regulatory gap behind the collapse

Erkelens blames a regulatory gap. The Ministry of Health stopped ordering from Bedrocan on 1 January 2026, the date the contract with the Bureau Medicinale Cannabis (BMC) was terminated. The legal changes allowing independent operation were not put in place at the same time.

For decades, Bedrocan was the exclusive cannabis supplier to the BMC. Former health minister Ernst Kuipers wanted more market freedom and a smaller role for the BMC. The amending opium law that would let companies operate independently is expected to take effect in 2028.

Patients abroad feel the impact

The fallout reaches beyond the Netherlands. About 7,000 patients in Belgium are affected, and roughly 1,000 people in Norway regularly cross the border to buy Bedrocan products, the same report says.

In the UK, Target Healthcare has made Bedrolite since 2022 from plant material sourced in the Netherlands. It told families that its existing stock will last six months.

British families appeal to Downing Street

Five British organisations wrote a joint letter to the Prime Minister: MedCan Family Foundation, Young Epilepsy, UK Infantile Spasms Trust, Epilepsy Action and SUDEP Action. Lord Zac Goldsmith delivered it by hand to 10 Downing Street.

They warn that seven children and young people with severe, drug-resistant epilepsy could lose their medication. They describe the crisis as the result of eight years of political failure. Parliament allowed medical cannabis prescriptions in 2018.

The British embassy is consulting the Dutch Ministry of Health about a temporary export exemption. No approval has been granted, and the organisations say the release of Dutch stock to British patients still needs confirmation.

What happens next

  • The talks between the unnamed bidder and the curator must be finalised.
  • The Erkelens family continues its restart plan.
  • Talks on a temporary export exemption go on.
